Major themes - laws and no laws
Golding has expressed frequently in the book that there would be a huge contrast in human behaviour if there would be no laws implemented. For example, as civilized boys they arrived at the island. With each passing day, the weak-minded and ironically , the well adapted boys become more and more savage, while the strong-willed and often shunned boys helplessly withstand the savagery enveloping the island. The boys' sudden exposure to freedom caused havoc and also separated them into two groups. The loss of laws caused the boys' evil in their hearts and also their more "primal" survival instincts to take control, and thus causes the deaths of Simon and Piggy. A lot of people complain everyday that civilization, laws, their parents and the like always constrict them, constrict their freedom and blah. But this book shows us what would happen if we were given the chance to be totally relieved from civilization and be truly "free". We need people to guide us, correct us, encourage and help us , and that evil does not breed due to external influences, but more likely within. This book forms an "argument" over this issue, and aims to show us that civilization and laws must be implemented in today's world to ensure even the faintest bit of order and stability.
