Hey all,
3) Although this society is demented, driven mad and crazy, it provides security and acceptance. Ralph and Piggy felt that there is a need because they probably had given up on their initial aims on maintaining law and order. They may also felt that since nobody fancies them and their ideas, why not move along with the others and join the demented group, a strategic move indeed. It not only gives them some sense of security, others might now accept and respect them too. Basically it is just natural that you would join this group. Would you want to join a society which guarantees you from being hunted like a pig and done in at every opportunity?(After witnessing the ganging up on Maurice) Of course you would.

Hey all again,
2) Firstly, I think the rituals serve as a barometer to measure the level of savagery the boys are in. As the rituals get wilder than before, we know that they have elevated to a higher level of savagery, being more inclined to it already. Scenarios like Wilfred being tied up and beaten up the others, Simon being killed by them too, mistaking him as the Beast.
I think the rituals also serve as a kind of prayer to clear off their sins as they perform them every after they kill pigs. Similar to how Christians pray to Jesus to clear off their sins. So that they might feel a sense of ease and off from guilty to continue hunting and killing pigs the next day. This maybe showed they still had some sense of civilization in them. They had no choice but to kill pigs for food and survival, it isn't totally their fault to resort to violence and murder.
And it may also serve as a form of relaxation and recreation to the boys after a long hard day's work hunting. As they dance and enjoy feast, these activities showed enjoyment and fun.

Hey all,
4) A double entendre is basically a phrase which has two mutually exclusive meanings.
In this context, I think the 2 different meanings are: 1. Telling us about one's view, understanding and realization towards death. Death, something that is unavoidable to everyone. Death as a tool for escape off worries and pain. Death, a cruel thing which happens to living-things. Death as a form of rest and relaxation. Death as a mystery or a challenge for the living to solve. From these, we can see that there are many different views, understandings, and realizations towards death. So this meaning of the title is valid.
2. A view to a death. It could also mean that someone is going to meet death, to die soon. A view to a death could maybe mean that one could already see the road/bridge/ the connection of one's life to death/end. Thus this title could act as a foreshadowing device of one nearing death, going to die soon. So this meaning of the title is also valid.
Hence, the title "A View to a Death" could be seen as a double entendre.

Hi guys,
I will be answering question 3. 3) Why do Ralph and Piggy feel the need to be a part of "this demented but partly secure society"?
Ok, in general, lets say if we are now in an island, we would have the urge to join a group or society that is with full of members as we would have a greater sense of security with them.
Now, let me elaborate this situation in the case of Ralph and Piggy. Having known that Jack was such a violent and blood-thirsty bully, Ralph and Piggy will know that it is not wise to go against them or not be part of them as they understand that when Jack became wild, he was capable of doing anything bad including killing, beating and cruel actions.
If they would to join them, they will feel safer as a group but they will expect a lot of huntings, rituals and huntings which they find is savagery and hence disapprove of them as Ralph and Piggy were the only two who were trying to restore peace and orders and maintain civilisation. If they were to join them with Jack as the leader, the society will have a "killing spree" everday, killing pigs and be like savages which Ralph and Piggy did not feel like doing.
Hence, in conclusion, Piggy and Ralph had the urge to join the society was due to their feeling of a sense of security and to be part of the group. But in the meantime, they did not felt like it as they did not want to revert to primitive ways of living.

Hi all, I will be discussing the 2) What is the function of rituals in this society (on the island)? question. We can see that rituals are a part of their savage instincts. Their rituals obviously hep to boost their spirit, and raise their morale. It also might remind them constantly that they are savages, and their ultimate goal is to absorb all power on the island, and rule themselves. This can be suggested by the rather harsh words in their ritual, like "Kill the pig!" and other gory stuff. This also serves as a turning point in how their savagery totally takes on a completely different level. It can also be seen as a verbal offering towards the LOTF, who is almost worshiped by Jack and the other savages. Thus, we can see that the function of rituals on this island is mainly to mark their descent into the darkness of evil, as well as a form of obsession towards the LOTF.

I would like to answer this question:
1) Why do you think this chapter begins with a weather report?
A weather report could five us a hint on what will happen in the Chapter.
For example, for this chapter, it begins with:
"Over the island the build-up of clouds continued. A steady current of heated air rose all day from the mountain and was thrust to ten thousand feet; revolving masses of gas piled up the static until the air was ready to explode. By early evening the sun had gone and a brassy glare had taken the place of clear daylight. Even the air that pushed in from the sea was hot and held no refreshment. Colors drained from water and trees and pink surfaces of rock, and the white and brown clouds rooded."
It tells us that the island may rain as more clouds are appearing in the sky.
This may foreshadows something awful that is going to happen soon.
Cheers, Sun Yu

Hi,
I will be attempting on question 4 for now.
4) Firstly, I would like to state that entendre is a French verb. Here is the definition from Microsoft Encarta 2008 Dictionaries:
So basically here double entendre means double meaning which in turn means a pun. I feel that one of its meanings is that it is finally understood by Simon by looking at the death and understanding and solving the problems and mysteries of their “strange” savagery, etc. However, look at the word death and we got another meaning – if death here is portrayed as a monster, how can Simon escape unharmed from death and knowing his “secrets”? if death lets you go around telling everybody what is death and all other problems associated with it then how are death going to remain as the death that we feared? So here it foreshadowed the death of Simon and shortly after, Simon indeed never escaped death and he went away together with the truth.

Hi all,
I will be answering on Questions 1, 2 and 3.
1) In my opinion, the weather is closely related to the brutal, animalistic murder of Simon and the taking over of civilization order by brutality and chaos. This is evident in the book that “A steady current of heated air rose all day from the mountain and was thrust to ten thousand feet; revolving masses of gas piled up the static until the air was ready to explode”. This signifies that the savagery was exploding and taking over civilization. In addition, the line “Colours drained from water and trees and pink surfaces of rock. Implying the fact that Simon was about to die. Hence, the weather acted as a foreshadowing of the events that happened later in this chapter.
2) Firstly, here is the definition from Microsoft Encarta 2008 Dictionaries.
Hence, in ritual means a pattern of observance such as in a religion. Here in Lord of the Flies, the main ritual is started by Jack and it was done every time after they had killed a pig. It was performed wildly and with savagery. This helps Jack to lure them into savagery that exists within every one of us and thus control them.
3) Ralph and Piggy feel the need to be this part of this demented but partly secure society partly because he still had some hope of restoring civilization to the island. He may be able to overthrown Jack and take away his powers. It is also partly because although the idea of a beast may not be real to Ralph, it still troubles him and somehow he finds himself in need of some form of protection, since home can’t be his protection now. In addition, Jack raided his camp and this made him felt more insecure. Hence, he actually wanted to join Jack’s side that at least provided him some form of protection, both mentally and physically.

"the build up of clouds.A steady current of heated air rose all day, by early evening the sun had gone and was replaced by a brassy glare, the air from the sea was hot and not cooling, colours drained from water, trees and pink surfaces of rock, white and brown clouds brooded and nothing prospered." this signifies the steady decline of civilisation on the island to that of savagery and highlights how chaos and brutality have taken over. The fact that the storm washes away simon's dead body and the dead parachutist also shows how the fear of the beast and the death of simon no longer bothers them, they are now controlled by the inner evil within themselves.
2) the rituals on the island highlight the boys' increasing intensity of their savagery. as each ritual gets more and more intense, their acts of savagery turn more and mroe brutal. the ritual is almost like some kind of offering in a religion, and while they originally "worshipped" the beast, they now worshipped savagery and allows it to completely take over them. thus, each time the ritual gets more intense, it marks another step for the boys in their downfall to savagery.
